Åheden - project continuous-cover forestry northern Sweden

Summary

The experiment is built as an infrastructure and platform for different types of research where parts of the area/individual treatments can be used independently or the entire area +20 ha as a whole. The basic idea of ​​the experiment is to compare different ways of managing forests in northern Sweden without clearing and to see the difference compared to traditional clear-cutting on the same premises. The experiment wants to study, among other things, regeneration, departures, growth, damage and how natural values ​​including lichens are changed by different clear-cutting forestry methods. The experiment is a collaboration between SLU, Sveaskog, the Church of Sweden and the Swedish Forest Agency. The experiment at Åheden is the third in a series of four similar experiments in northern Sweden. The first experiment is located at Lake Storjuktan in Sorsele municipality, Västerbotten. The second experiment is located in Ätnarova experimental park, Gällivare municipality, Norrbotten. The fourth experiment is located in Föllinge municipality, Jämtland. The idea is that these experiments will exist over a long period of time, so-called long-term trial. The trial in Åheden is established in July 2021. Försöket ska jämföra olika sätt att sköta skog i nordvästra Sverige hyggesfritt samt se skillnad mot traditionellt trakthyggesbruk på samma lokal. Försöket vill studera föryngring, avgångar, tillväxt, skador och hur naturvärden inkluderat lavar förändras av olika hyggesfria skogsbruksmetoder. Försöket är ett samarbete mellan SLU, Sveaskog och Skogsstyrelsen. Försöket på Svartbergets försökspark är det tredje i en serie av liknande försök i norra Sverige.
